In 2021, I began to collect postcards from all over Illinois. What was at first an innocent hobby soon turned into a curiosity to document the change I saw when visiting the postcards’ subjects in person. The process involved finding the initial photographs in antique stores and at estate sales, researching the landmarks or locations, and then revisiting and rephotographing the postcards as closely as possible to the original. Any postcards’ backs that have letters written on them are documented as well in order to date the postcard. What results is a continuing photographic survey of the everchanging landscape of the state.
The Postcard Project, 2022-
While still very much a work in progress, I plan on publishing this body of work as a sort of reference book that documents the changes in local landmarks while also providing background information on them.
